Jane From Survivor Does P90x

P90x On SurvivorP90x has made it to prime time television! Last night on Survivor, one of the contestants mentioned how she trained for the show with P90x. Jane Bright is her name and in last night episode, she won the immunity challenge, beating out  the other contestants that are much younger than her, and it was a challenge that mostly involved strength.  Great job Jane!

P90x Is A Great Workout For Runners

The P90x exercise program is a great workout for runners. Strength training with focus on plyometrics, stretching, and mobility work are all things every runner should be already working on. It turns out that P90x focuses on these exact same things, which is why P90x is great for runners and for those training for a marathon.

Runners have started to take notice of how effective the P90x workout is, and this is why Tony Horton, the creator of P90x, will be appearing on the cover of Competitor Magazine for upcoming November issue. The issue has not been released yet so I have not been able to read the article, but here is a little from Competitor’s website below:

In the cover story written by Jeff Banowetz, Horton says, “I can’t tell you how many marathoners I know who stopped their training—and started using us.” The article also includes the story of a once-overweight triathlete who gave P90X a try and set a PR in his next 5K. If you snoop around on internet running forums you’ll find lots of sunny testimonials from runners who have benefited from P90X.

The reasons it’s helpful to runners are pretty clear. First of all, the program is high-volume—you’re working out an hour a day, on average. Second, most of the workouts are high heart-rate. Even the strength workouts are uptempo and allow little rest, so you’re getting a good cardiovascular boost even as you gain strength. And third, P90X addresses some key weaknesses that many runners have: namely, strength, flexibility, mobility, power, and anaerobic endurance. So even though the typical runner who tries P90X runs less for 90 days, he gains more than he loses.

There’s obviously more than one way a runner can incorporate P90X into his training, and the best way depends on individual considerations. One good way to use it is as an off-season cross-training program. Stop or curtail your running and switch your focus to P90X over the winter, then ramp up your running in the spring and retain two or three mini P90X-style workouts in your weekly regimen to maintain the well-rounded fitness you’ve earned.

Completing the full P90X program as designed is not the most efficient way to improve your running through cross-training. The program was not specifically designed for runners, after all. You’ll probably get the greatest possible boost in your running performance if you maintain a fairly high running volume and cherry pick parts of the P90X program to add to your routine. Research shows that a modest amount of strength and power training gives runners as much performance benefit as they can possibly get from these types of training (provided they also run a lot). Any additional time spent in the gym would be better spent running. P90X definitely prescribes more strength, power, and flexibility and mobility training, too, for that matter, than any runner needs.

Put another way, suppose you cloned yourself twice. One you continued running and avoiding cross-training. Another you quit running and switched to P90X. A third you cut back modestly on his running and made up the difference with an equal volume of strength, power, flexibility and mobility training pulled out of P90X. After 90 days, this third you would show the biggest improvement in a running performance test.

The thing I like most about P90X is that it makes people work really hard, and the marketing is very up-front about that. Most runners really don’t work very hard. They are willing to spend a lot of time training, but they resist the pain of high intensities. That’s too bad, because high-intensity exercise has magical effects on fitness that no amount of moderate-intensity running can replicate. I believe that the high-intensity element of P90X is probably the primary factor behind the performance benefits that many runners seem to get from it—an even more important factor than strength and power improvements. You don’t need to do P90X to get the benefits of high-intensity training, and every runner—whether he uses P90X in whole, in part, or not at all—should do some high-intensity running, but for those runners who are not on intimate terms with the scorched-esophagus  feeling that comes at the end of a set of hard intervals on the track, P90X represents a good way to learn to love—or at least tolerate—that sort of training.

A lot of girls have asked me, “will P90x make me too bulky?”. This is a great question and I understand a woman’s fear of becoming too muscular. While a little definition is great on women, I doubt you’ll want your boyfriend asking you to open the jar of pickles for him. There is a point where muscles can get too big on a women, just look at the girl pictured on the right, she looks like she could beat Sylvester Stallone in an arm wrestling match.

But there is no need to worry, generally women don’t have the muscle building hormones that men do so they are unable to bulk up like men do. When you see a women who is big and bulky like a man, there is probably some sort of hormone supplement involved.

Also, each P90x workout is customizable to the individual’s own goals, depending on if you want to bulk up, or just burn fat and get lean muscles, each P90x exercise move is done differently. The great part about P90x is that Tony Horton, the guy from the video, explains everything great and is constantly reminding you, he says things like, “now on this set you’ll want to use heavier weight and do 8-10 reps, but if you want to tone up, use a lighter weight and do 12-15 reps”.

There are also a few different versions of P90x that can be done, the classic, and the lean version. If you are truly concerned about becoming too muscular, I’d recommend trying out the lean version of the program. The lean version has less resistance training days and focuses a little more on the cardio workouts. You’ll still see great results with the P90x lean version.

Many women believe that the only way to lose weight is to do cardiovascular (aerobic exercise). So they jog or take aerobics classes five times a week. Eventually, though, they notice that while their bodies are a little smaller, there are still a lot of flabby and jiggly bits. Sound familiar? For optimal fitness, longevity, and a lean body, weight training is essential. If you avoid pumping iron because you’re afraid of getting “bulky,” then you’re missing out on one of the best fat-burning methods around.

When you’re weight training, you shouldn’t rely exclusively on the scale to gauge your progress. You can use a body fat tester or a tape measure to track how many inches you’re losing. The size of your body will shrink as you shed fat and build muscle, but your weight may not change as dramatically as you expect. Besides, what’s more important, the number on the scale or how you look in your skinny jeans?

Training safely and with proper form can help decrease the likelihood of injuries in your daily life. It can also improve physical function in people with arthritis. A study conducted at the University of Wales in Bangor, United Kingdom, found that mildly disabled participants who lifted weights for 12 weeks increased the frequency and intensity at which they could work, with less pain and increased range of movement.
  • Heart health. More than 480,000 women die from cardiovascular disease each year, making it the number-one killer of women over the age of 25. Most people don’t realize that pumping iron can also keep your heart pumping. Lifting weights increases your “good” (HDL) cholesterol and decreases your “bad” (LDL) cholesterol. It also lowers your blood pressure. The Journal of the American Medical Association reports that people who do 30 minutes of weight lifting each week have a 23 percent reduced risk of developing heart disease compared to those who don’t lift weights.
  • Defend against diabetes. In addition to keeping your ticker strong, weight training can improve glucose utilization (the way your body processes sugar) by as much as 23 percent. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 16 weeks of strength training can improve glucose metabolism in a way that is comparable to taking diabetes medication. The more lean mass you have, the more efficient your body is at removing glucose from the blood, which can reduce complications from diabetes or even help prevent type 2 diabetes in the first place.

Some people who workout regularly might wonder if P90x will work for them. They probably figure that they are already in decent shape so hard could it really be. Kelly’s P90x Results And Review Video

P90x just passed the 200,000 “Likes” mark on its facebook page. It used to be a “fans” button but for some reason facebook has changed it to a “likes” button. Either way, that is a lot of people who “like” P90x. Less than 6 months ago I made a post about P90x reaching the 100,000 fans mark. This means that the popularity has doubled in less than 6 months. That is awesome! As a Beachbody Coach it is great to see such fast growth in a company, I’m very lucky to be a part of it.

So why is the P90x exercise program becoming so popular? The answer is simple, because P90x produces results. It is not like anyone forced all of these people to go out of their way to “like” P90x on their facebook profiles, these people genuinely love the product. Someone who is skeptic might say, “I bet all of the 200,000 people on facebook that “like” P90x are Beachbody Coaches that are just trying to build up some hype”. The problem with this statement is that there are currently only about 32,000 Beachbody Coaches. So even if every single Beachbody Coach “liked” P90x on facebook, there are still 170,000 other people out there that the love the product. The bottom line is that P90x is truly a great product that people love. P90x will undoubtedly have 1 million “likes” sometime in the future, I just wonder how long it will take to get there. My guess would be about a year or 2, we’ll see.

Mike Tyson On Day 1 Of P90x

Iron Mike, famous for biting off a chunk of Evander Holyfield’s ear, is doing P90x. He just tweeted (see the tweet) that he is starting the program and posted his “before” picture and says he will post another picture after 30 days. I’m excited to see Tyson’s results, growing up I was a huge fan of Mike Tyson and always loved watching him fight. I was especially a huge fan of his Nintendo game, Mike Tyson’s Punchout!, which I beat :) Click here to play the game.

Another big name added to the list of celebrities and professional athletes that are doing P90x. I’m sure Mike will have great results. Who knows, maybe his results will be so good that he’ll decide to make a comeback and take another shot at the title, how funny would that be?

P90x Yoga For Men

No That's Not Me...But I Gotta Get That Outfit

Before doing the P90x exercise program I didn’t really know anything about yoga. All I knew was that there was no way I was going to be doing any yoga, to me, “yoga was for girls”.  I had no interest in yoga. I had always thought yoga was strictly for women and it was all about doing some silly stretches. Then I started P90x and on day 4 I was introduced to the yoga x workout. All my preconceived notions on yoga were shattered in those 90 minutes.

Yes, the yoga x workout is 90 minutes long, and it is tough. For me, it was probably one of the toughest workouts out of the entire 12 P90x workouts. But even being one of the hardest, I found that it was also one of the P90x workouts that I enjoyed the most. I’m not even sure why I like it so much, maybe because it is hard as hell or maybe because it is just a nice change of pace from the regular weight lifting I’ve done over the years.

Since P90x, I’ve learned that yoga isn’t “just for girls”. There are a ton of guys who do yoga, even professional athletes such as boxing great Evander Holyfield, Shaquille O’Neil, football greats Eddie George and Shannon Sharpe, and the entire roster of the LA Lakers just to name a few. If yoga is good enough for professional athletes, it is good enough for me, after all, being in tip top shape is their job. Even though the yoga x work is tough, it is also very relaxing. The workout starts out intense, then gradually get easier. The last 10 minutes of the P90x yoga x workout is basically just laying and sitting on your yoga mat, breathing deeply and relaxing. Yoga has many benefits, I’ve found that is great for improving flexibility and also a great stress reliever. I’m glad I chose to do P90x, overall I love it, had great results with it, Became a Beachbody Coach because of it, and it introduced me to yoga.

Ever wonder how Michelle Obama got those ripped up arms? My guess would be that she does the P90x Shoulders and Arms Workout…Yes it is true, Michelle Obama does do P90x. The first lady doing P90x, who would of thought this workout would become as popular as it has. And this isn’t just hearsay. The news that Michelle Obama does P90x came straight from the President’s mouth. The CEO of Beachbody, Carl Daikeler, was lucky enough to meet the President yesterday and this is how their conversation went:

At once the door swung open, and in walked Obama. He gave a quick hello and a hug to Mark and then he walked straight up to Jon who said “Hello Mr. President we’re the co-founders of Beachbody – This is Carl Daikeler. You might know our products like P90X.”

With that Obama moves in and grabs my hand in a handshake and says “P90X! My wife does that. Man, I can hardly keep up with her!”

Carl writes all about his meeting with the President in his blog post that you can find here (Click Here). Later on in the evening, Carl has an encounter with one of Obama’s security guys, he gives him a card and find out that the guy is 2 weeks into P90x, and from his words, “the entire White House is using P90x”.

Michelle Obama may be the biggest name yet added to the list of celebrities and athletes that do P90x. Once again, more proof that the P90x exercise program works and is here to stay.
