Many people have told me they would love to do the P90x exercise program, but are discouraged because P90x involves a lot of pull ups, and they are only able to do a few pull ups, or none at all. If you want to do P90x but are unable to a single pull up, don’t worry, pull ups are tough and that is why Tony Horton has created several different variations for you to follow depending on your fitness level.

A beginner who struggles with pull ups would want to use a chair to assist themselves. There are several ways to use the chair and move it around to make the pull up easier, or more difficult. Once you think you have the chair version mastered, you can do pull up without the chair, and use a shorter range of motion with some kipping. After a few weeks of doing pull ups that way, you’ll eventually be able to move up and do pull ups unassisted with proper form. Don’t worry, pull ups are tough and take time to build up the strength to be able to do even a couple. The resistance bands are also an option and they provide great results.

In the video below, Tony Horton shows and explains exactly how to do all of the P90x pull up variations.
